Var. caroliniana: In acidic, sandy, open woodlands, especially woodlands around granitic flatrocks, and also on rocky mafic slopes. Rare in NC Piedmont & Coastal Plain.
Var. pensylvanica: Open woodlands, especially calcareous, but also in sandy soils of the Coastal Plain. Rare throughout NC.
