Habitat Description:

Blackwater streams, rivers, and lakes, acid-water ponds, in swift, sluggish, or stagnant water, extending downriver into freshwater tidal areas. Endemic to our area: e. VA south to ne. SC, very conspicuous and locally abundant on shallow bars along rivers such as the Northeast Cape Fear, Black, and Waccamaw, and forming dense colonies in Lake Waccamaw.
This species has a very small range, rarely in eastern VA, and then south only to northeastern SC. Most of the range is located in southeastern NC.
Still locally common along a few blackwater rivers and a few lakes in the southern part of the range. Uncommon and local in the central portions of the Coastal Plain.
